The Birth Defect: Facebook Edition

Part of the reason I am writing this blog is that it is a way for me to keep up my own personal journal. So as such, I am including the Facebook post from the day we found out about the birth defect:

We got to see our babies again today. Sadly, one of them has a serious birth defect. It appears that his intestines are outside of his abdomen. The doctor feels the outlook for all three is still good, he told me "I believe you will still take three healthy babies home." It will just be a long road for little Baby C, likely needing surgery immediately upon birth and a long hospital stay. There are a whole host of problems that could go along with this, but as it is too early to tell exactly which kind of abdominal defect we are dealing with, I am going to try not to think about them until we have more facts. The next ultrasound is in 2 weeks and I am praying for a miracle, that it will be one of the more favorable things we discussed today and not the worst. We should know a lot more after the next ultrasound when the defect is more visible. I am feeling sad, but calm and full of trust and hope. I feel that this is all in Heavenly Father's hands and I completely trust myself and my babies to His loving care. I willingly accept whatever path He wants us to walk and know He won't give us anything we can't handle. I am so grateful for a loving Savior and supportive friends and family, especially my amazingly positive and supportive husband. Thank you for your prayers and love for my three babies and my family.
And here were the comments. I am so lucky to have such wonderfully supportive friends and family. That's a must in any pregnancy!

  • Allison L: Praying! God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, and He still performs miracles. Believing that He is in control and everything will be ok!
  • Shawna H: Praying for you all. Whatever the outcome He will hold you up
  • Stephanie K: You and your sweet babies are in my prayers!
  • Kristin M: I'm praying for you too.
  • Nikki P: Hang in there. Praying for a miracle. Are they calling it a gastroschisis or an omaphalocele?
  • Genny: Nikki, I thought about you a lot during the ultrasound! They couldn't tell yet. I am "hoping" for gastroschisis...funny how quickly your hopes and perceptions can change. They said it exhibited characteristics of both and didn't really match the textbook version of either. So that is the reason for the ultrasound in 2 weeks-they are hoping the shape will be more easily discernible. The tech was leaning towards omaphalocele but then the dr came in and did a second ultrasound and said it was too early to tell.
  • Caryn B: Love ya cous. You know you can call me whenever.
  • Genny: Nikki, my biggest worry, if it's omaphalocele, are the chromosomal defects that can occur along with it, the dr said it was about 50% of the cases of omaphalocele.
  • Genny: Love you too Caryn! I know you can empathize. I thought about you a lot today, thinking about all you had to deal with and now you have an awesome and healthy young man. Hoping I'm just as blessed and lucky!
  • Alexandria J: ((hugs)) you are awesome and I know Heavenly Father makes us equal to all that he requires of us, doesn't mean it will be easy, just very very worth it!
  • Caryn B: The things we go through for our kids- before they even get here!!
  • Genny: Alexandria that means a lot. You are my hero, all you have to deal with. I would never be able to have your kind of strength!
  • Alexandria: my strength is given to me by Heavenly Father, just as he will give you strength, but thank you for the kind words. I have looked up to you since i was a little girl, you were always a role model to me and still are.
  • Misty M: You and your sweet family will be in our prayers!
  • Kirsten S: Genny, whatever happens, Baby C will be in good hands. Nevertheless, you and Baby C and Baby Kirsten and Baby Kirsten (I had to throw that in) are always in my thoughts and prayers.
  • Leann W: I had a cousin born with his intestines on the outside. He is now a 6'4 return missionary. His prognosis was not good either...when he was born he fit in the palm of my hand. ....praying for good news...and healthy babies! I told Tom I want to move back just to come help you when you bring them home, afterall we still own our house.
  • Jennifer F: I'll keep you guys in my prayers...
  • Genny: Leann, thank you for that! I love hearing things like that. Come on back! We'd love to have you all back, I think I can speak for the whole ward on that one!
  • Faustine G: Sending u prayers and thoughts for your babies. **hugs**
  • Tony V: Prayer to all of your little babies! When I was a nicu social worker at good Sam I had lots of babies with both defects and no other chromosome issues and they all did great. It can be a long road but my babies all went home! Luv to u and JJ. Please let me know when u find out and I can get u info from the Emily center at PCH if u want it.
  • Genny: Thanks Tony! I think JJ is planning on calling Lisa and having a chat as well. We need all the info and hope and success stories we can get right now! It's funny how many success stories I've heard from friends just in the 6 hours we've known. Every one increases my faith and hope!
  • Tony V: I saw lots of success stories! I will message J.J. too. I saw he was switching jobs. Very exciting. Wanted to ask him about his insurance and let him know what can work best for coverage with triplets and nicu stays! Luv u guys.
  • Loyle R: will keep them on my thoughts for a long and healthy life!.
  • Genny: Thanks Tony! Insurance is one of those things I am freaking out about a little, especially now! I have no idea what the benefits are in that district, and I especially don't know how it will work considering we will lose our current insurance at the end of June (I think) and not get the new districts' coverage until August (again, I think...not positive). But the job is too good to pass up so we will have to do whatever is necessary!
  • Anthony H: Marc and I are sending you lots of love and prayers!
  • Genny: Thanks Tony! Love to you and Marc
  • Lori P: We are praying for you and your babies!
  • Kenra J: I'm sure it is super scary news but I agree with your doctor. You are going to bring home three sweet babies.
  • Nikki P: Genny I will pray that its gastroschisis everything I learned it has the better prognosis. Hugs and love.
  • Lori D: Praying for you and your babies!
  • Leeann T: Oh hugs!!!!!! Prayers will continue. How many weeks are you now?
  • Tami G: Your ward family is praying for you and will do everything possible to make sure all is done to help you and your babies.
  • Genny: Oh my goodness I love you all! I have the most wonderful people in my corner! Leeann- I am 14 weeks tomorrow. The dr said by making it this far Baby C has already declared himself a survivor.
  • Tony V: I will call JJ this weekend! Hang in there. Hugs to u and those 2 adorable little kids too!!! Oh and JJ too....oops
  • Pamela S: Thoughts of love and health for your little babies!

  • Lois R: Prayers always!!
  • Cyndie H: You are all in our prayers.
  • Kari P: Hugs and prayers for all. Love ya!
  • Marianne S: I am praying for you and your family- specifically for a miracle healing that only He can provide. Much love to you and JJ.
  • Chad L: God will not give you a burden you cannot handle. So if you find yourself in the midst of a trial, take it as a compliment- God thinks you can do it! When I get on my knees tonight to talk to God, your family will be the topic of conversation. Hang in there, things will always work out the way they are supposed to. Love you guys!
  • Kayla G: I will be praying for the best! you!
  • Deana C: You have our prayers, too!

  • Tammy P: My family will be keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers. You certainly have the best attitude about it!
  • Melani C: Your babies and whole family are in our prayers, Genny!
  • Lindsey P: You are stronger than you know, and He always makes up the difference. If you need help/info with benefits in the district, I have lots of answers. I am more than happy to help you figure out which plan is best for you and your family. I deal with our insurance a lot. Feel free to call or whatever anytime.
  • J.J.: This is one reason why I love Facebook - a network of friends that can come together and uplift and give words of advice and love. Thank you everyone.
  • Kristen K: Sending prayers for the best outcome for all 3 babies inside, the 2 you already have and both mommy and daddy!
  • Michele L: You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
  • Cindy D: Prayers are being said for you and your family. Such a trial, but you are correct, the Lord does not give us more than we can handle.
  • Alma R: Genny, our prayers are constantly with you. Love you all so much! I put you and babies on the prayer roll yesterday morning and will keep your family in there as well as in our own prayers! Other side of the matter: Can you get Cobra (though expensive) to cover you during the months in between insurances? It may be well worth it.
  • Jacki A: Granny, I didn't know you were expecting triplets! Congrats!! I'll pray for you and baby "C".
  • Jacki A: Genny!! (Sorry about autocorrect). Kinda a funny one actually.
  • Carissa R: Sorry about that scary news but you are right, and your attitude is amazing! I am praying for both you and all three of your precious babies! Especially baby C.
  • Andy V: Genny, You are all in my prayers.
  • Cheyenne P: We love you guys and are praying for you and your sweet family.
